Sub-folders (nested folders) allow you to organize your mailboxes in multiple levels of folders. This can be helpful in sorting and managing large numbers of mailboxes.

When you use the New Folder... command in Thunderbird, by default it creates an actual mailbox within your IMAP folder or your Local Folders.

[edit] How To

To nest folders within your IMAP directory on the server, click once on the secure IMAP account name (username@domain) and select New Folder. To create a master (top-level) folder, enter the name of the new folder -- followed immediately by a forward slash (/) -- and create it as a sub-folder of username@domain. Then, right-click on that folder's name in the IMAP account list and choose New Sub-folder.

[edit] Example

  • If you wanted to create a master folder called Projects and then sub-folders called Government and Physics beneath it, you would:
  1. First, create a New Folder in username@domain called Projects/
  2. Next, click on the new Projects folder in username@domain and click New Sub-folder, then enter Government;
  3. Finally, click again on the Projects folder and enter Physics.

It is also possible to nest multiple levels of sub-folders. (For instance, if you entered Government/ and Physics/, you would then be able to create sub-folders underneath those two headers.) Master/top-level folders cannot themselves contain email messages.

To nest folders within Local Folders, simply right-click (Macintosh: Option+Click) on any folder and choose New Sub-folder. (Right-click or Option+Click on Local Folders to create a top-level folder.) Enter the name of the new mailbox or folder you wish to create; the folder will appear underneath the folder you initially selected. Unlike IMAP folders, top-level Local Folders can themselves contain email messages.
